Whiplash And Car Accident Injuries

Automobile accidents often cause neck and head injuries, which can have long-lasting complications if not identified and properly treated. The painful neck injury known as whiplash is a particularly common consequence of rear-end collisions.  At Apollo Chiropractic in Murray, Utah, the team of board certified specialists are experts in diagnosing and treating this acute injury to prevent it from becoming a source of chronic pain for patients in Salt Lake County, including Salt Lake City.

The Importance of Initial Evaluation Soon After the Accident

It is important that the injured party be evaluated soon after the accident to assess the extent of injuries and follow through with treatment recommendations to achieve the desired pain free outcome. If there is a gap in time from the accident to when the patient is examined and begins treatment or a gap in treatment itself insurance companies are less likely to pay on those claims. Our goal is to get you evaluated quickly and begin treatment that works best for you and your schedule.

Whiplash And Car Accidents Q&A

What is whiplash?

A whiplash injury is among the most commonly sustained auto accident injuries. Most whiplash injuries occur while you’re relaxed and sitting stationary in the car, when you’ve suddenly been rear-ended. Upon impact, your head is jerked backward, causing the cervical neck to sustain what’s known as an “S-shaped curve.” When that occurs, the natural C-shape curve at the back of the neck is jarred from its natural position. In short, you’ve sustained a whiplash injury, which can cause damage to both bones and soft tissue.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

It can take days, weeks or even months for the symptoms of whiplash to appear. Some common early symptoms of whiplash include:
Neck pain and stiffness
Pain that worsens with movement
Inability to move your neck in its full range of motion
Headaches, which often start at the base of the skull
Tenderness or pain that radiates through your shoulders, upper back, and arms
A tingling sensation or numbness in your arms
Dizziness or fatigue

How is whiplash treated?

The first step is a thorough evaluation to determine the severity of the injury and the pain it’s causing. Once that’s established, your doctor at Apollo Health will create an individualized program that may entail one or more of the following modalities:
Massage Therapy
Targeted exercise program
Manual adjustments

Will the soreness go away on its own?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that they will feel better in a few days after the accident. Some individuals make the trip to the E.R. examined, given an Rx for pain, told that they are O.K. and then released. The emergency room is there to provide life-saving procedures so if nothing is broken, patients are usually released to go home. Do not make the mistake that everything is O.K. because many injuries show up later as found in a recent study that 62%-86% of individuals in car wrecks with whiplash injuries had significant symptoms 10-15 years later!

Do I need an attorney to get treatment?

Another mistake patients mistake is not seeking treatment because they think that they need an attorney before seeking care. This is not the case. We will be able to determine if a patient is in need of an attorney based upon our exam findings. If this is the case we only work with well qualified attorneys who specialize in these types of cases.

There isn’t much damage to my car. Can I really be that hurt?

A common concern that people often have is that there wasn’t much property damage to my car, so I must not be too hurt. A research study by Charles Carroll, M.D., et al found, “The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to the force applied to the cervical spine (neck) of the occupants.”

How much will treatment cost?

The vast majority of auto patients that come into our office pay nothing out of pocket for treatment. Utah is considered a “no fault” state. That means that regardless of who is at fault, there are funds set aside for your treatment, at least $3,000.00. The patients that end up paying for treatment are those who have waited to start treatment. The best way to avoid this is to come in for an exam and start treatment as soon as possible after the accident. If there is a gap in time from the wreck and when you start treatment, the insurance company likely will deny responsibility and you will be left with covering your expenses.
